In keeping with Ethiopia’s status as aland of startling contrasts, Bale Mountain National Park is a land of rugged mountains, cloud-dampened alpine forest, and the country’s largest concentration of large mammals. Known for its lush forests and high concentration of mammals, Bale Mountains National Park is the perfect destination for hikers, wildlife watchers, and nature enthusiasts. Here you can find gorges, lakes, streams, waterfalls, volcanic ridges and stunning views. These mountains are another important biodiversity hotspot, supporting evergreen forests, giant bamboo, moorlands, and juniper sheltered river valleys. Wildlife here include the Mountain Nyala, Ethiopian wolf, Menilik’s Bushbuck, Bale Monkey, warthogs, serval cats, Leopard, Abyssinian Black Manned Lion, Forest Hogs and many more. Bird-watchers and hikers are sure to find something to capture their imagination in the park as well.
6 Days Bale Mountains Trekking Tour
Day 01. Drive to Bale Mountains
Leave Addis and take a drive to Bale Mountains National Park which is about 400km to southeast of Addis. On your arrival to the park headquarters, meet the team. in time for a leisurely afternoon hike, possibly spotting two endemic mammals that frequent seen to the area: Menelik’s Bushbuck and the Mountain Nyala. Birds in this area include the Blue-Winged Goose, the Spot-Breasted Lapwing, the Abyssinian Long Claw, Wattled Ibis, the Black-Headed Siskin, Rouget’s Rail, and numerous other species. 2hrs walk.
Overnight camping at Dinsho. 3000masl.
Day 02. Trekking to Sodota:-Start hiking from Dinsho and enter the national park. while trekking through the park there will be a chance to see the rarest canid Ethiopian Wolf, Rock Hyrax, Giant Mole rat and most of birds of prey. stop by Habera waterfall for a nice break then heading to Sodota campsite for overnight. 3,500masl. 5-6 hrs 20km walk.
Day 03. Trekking to wasema:-Trek to Wasema through a beautiful landscape with stunning views. Pass through Mararo Valley where the Lammergeyer and Verraux Eagles keep nests. There will also be a chance a seeing the Ethiopian Wolf and other species of birds. 5-6hrs 18km hike. Overnight Camping 3900masl.
Day 04. Trekking to sanneti:-Morning after breakfast start the day by hiking through wasema mountain and then continue down into the Worgona Valley. Falcons, raptors, and possibly the Ethiopian wolf will be visible. pass through Lake Gerba Gurracha, meaning “black lake” in the Oromo language. 7-8 hrs 23km Overnight Camping 4100masl.
Day 05. Drive to HarenaForest
Morning after breakfast take a drive to the southern part of the national park which is the largest tropical rain forest in the country. spend the day doing some activities in the forest such as hiking to the bamboo waterfall trails and spot the endemic Bale Monkey and Colobus. then back to Robe town for overnight. 2600masl.
Day 06. Return back to Addis.
After breakfast drive back to Addis on the way back we will have a chance to spot some more birds and Ethiopian Wolves. then proceed our drive to Addis with some stops on the way.
