Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area of outstanding ecological importance located in southern Ethiopia, within the Borena Zone of the Oromia Region, west of the town of Yabelo. Covering approximately 2,500 square kilometers, the sanctuary lies at elevations ranging from 1,430 to 2,000 meters above sea level, making it a diverse landscape of savanna plains, rolling hills, and lowland ecosystems.

Landscape & Vegetation: The sanctuary is particularly notable for its distinctive red soils, which contain little organic matter and strongly influence the vegetation patterns of the area. The dominant vegetation type is Acacia savanna, with key tree species including Acacia drepanolobium on black cotton soils and Acacia brevispica and Acacia horrida on sloping terrain. At lower elevations, patches of Balanites aegyptiaca are common, along with several species of Commiphora and Terminalia.Historically, the higher hill areas were covered by forest dominated by Juniperus procera and Olea europaea cuspidata, remnants of which still reflect the sanctuary’s former forested landscape.

Wildlife & Birdlife: Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary is internationally recognized for its exceptional avian diversity and the protection of rare and endemic species. The sanctuary is one of the most important habitats for endemic Ethiopian birds, including Stresemann’s Bushcrow (also known as the Ethiopian Bush Crow) and the White tailed Swallow, both of which are restricted range and globally vulnerable species.

The sanctuary also protects the endemic Swayne’s Hartebeest, making it a site of high conservation value. Other globally threatened but non-endemic species found here include the Taita Falcon. With 62 Somali Masai Biome bird species, Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary safeguards approximately 64% of Ethiopia’s Somali Masai biome bird assemblage, making it one of the most significant birding destinations in the country.

Notable bird species recorded in the sanctuary include Ostrich, Short-tailed Lark, Pringle’s Puffback, Northern Grey Tit, Abyssinian Grosbeak Canary, Vulturine Guineafowl, Somali Sparrow, Black-capped Social Weaver, Donaldson-Smith Nightjar, Star-spotted Nightjar, Grey-headed Social Weaver, and Magpie Starling.

Mammals & Other Wildlife: In addition to its rich birdlife, the sanctuary supports populations of Burchell’s Zebra, along with smaller numbers of Grant’s Gazelle and Gerenuk, adding to its appeal for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
